Frequently Asked Questions About Artificial Grass From Denver Dog Owners

September 13, 2022

Are you thinking about artificial grass and wondering how that’ll work for your furry loved ones? Look no further! We’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions we get about artificial grass for dogs for you.

Is It Actually Safe For Dogs?

Absolutely! Synthetic grass is safe for pets. Typically, most pet turf you can buy is built to be longer lasting than ordinary synthetic grass and organic grass. You will also no longer need the harmful chemicals Fluffy may have been previously exposed to, like pesticides or fertilizers. Fake grass can help you to reduce allergens, too!

Will It Smell Bad?

Synthetic turf itself is odorless. So, if smells happen, it is typically because of something else. The #1 thing that most Denver, CO pet owners are worried about is if pet urine will lead to making the turf smell bad. Dogs do tend to choose one portion of the lawn to relieve themselves, so you may sometimes get a bit more build-up of urine odor in that one spot. Shawgrass pet turf is antimicrobial, however, which means it’s naturally smell resistant. But, If you do begin noticing an odor of urine in Fluffy’s favorite potty spot, you can use a solution water and vinegar(in equal amounts) to spray that area. Then, all you have to do is let it dry to eliminate any residual smells.

How Do You Clean Pet Waste Off It?

Fluffy will use your lawn as a bathroom, like he always has, but the clean-up process for you will be much easier. Shawgrass pet turf is built with an advanced flow-through backing system underneath the surface helping urine and other fluids drain better than on regular grass. Solid waste is also an easy clean-up — just let it dry a bit before removal for best results (it will be less messy the more dry it is). If you have any residue left, a quick rinse from the hose will eliminate any leftover waste.

Will Waste Stain It?

No, pet waste will not stain your turf permanently. We put our synthetic grass through strenuous testing so you have the best possible product. Through for years, we’ve implemented ways to ensure the grass will not fade or become stained from dog waste.

Do Fleas and Ticks Like Fake Grass?

Synthetic grass is made from an inorganic material which makes it a challenge for many pests like fleas and ticks to live. To be fair, we cannot guarantee that you will not get any ticks or fleas ever, but you can be sure there will be dramatically less exposure! As long as you regularly clean your turf and remove leaves or debris that would be ideal for their nesting, you will have few, if any, pests.

Can Dogs Destroy Artificial Grass?

Synthetic turf is made to withstand repetitive use and weather the harsh elements of every season, which makes it very unlikely for dogs to destroy it. Dogs won’t be able to dig holes like with ordinary grass, and you won’t have to mess with mud being tracked into your house, either. Dogs can still play with toys, run, and roll around like they do on regular grass, too.

How Do You Maintain It?

Upkeep on an artificial lawn is easier than you think. To keep turf looking good, all you have to do is remove any trash, sticks, and other debris and rinse it with your garden hose once a week if you haven’t had much rain. You can read through our guide to cleaning artificial turf here.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost of a turf project largely depends on exactly what components you need, so offering exact estimates is hard. However, here are a few elements that might impact your pricing.

  • The dimensions of the space you want artificial grass
  • The difficulty of the specific layout and design
  • The type of synthetic turf products you're looking to get
  • How much excavating needs to be done to remove the old turf, level the surface, etc.

Please be especially skeptical with contractors that give you a fixed price for a project with no consideration of how much work it actually involves. This often means they are not using high-quality materials and will cut costs for themselves where they can.

How Long Will It Last?

Shawgrass pet turf is estimated to last between 10-20 years, based on how much it’s used. However, even our oldest installations are very vibrant in color and lush, because of our UV-resistant design. All Shawgrass installations from Go Turf come complete with a one-year workmanship warranty and a manufacturer's warranty which covers fading. Be sure to read our product selection guide to begin looking for the perfect application for you.
